The middle of March, they were all sitting at the supper table when Raymond said, âI heard Walker Broom is back. Heâs brought a Yankee girl with him. He done married her.â
Sally said, âHa. Wonder what Hiram and Nell Broom think. Not much, I reckon.â
Leona dug her nails into her palms while Raymond went on. âThey say her name is Edith. I heard she talks so fast you canât hardly understand a word she says.â
When Isaiah started to cry, Leona snatched him up. âAll right,â she said, âitâs time for you to go to bed.â She said it harsher than she meant to. She carried the baby to her room with him shrieking all the way.
Long since dark. She lit Lutherâs lamp and lay down on the bed with Isaiah. She held him until he stopped crying. She was trembling. Walker, married? She didnât believe it. Yet Raymond had said it was so. He wouldnât make up such a thing.
âPoor little boy,â she whispered. âItâs not your fault.â
Isaiah climbed over her and gave her sloppy kisses. âMa,â he said, patting her face. He tugged at the buttons of her dress, and when she told him no, he howled. She gave in and let him nurse until he fell asleep.
She was far from sleep. She might as well have been slapped; her head still spun from the blow. She got up and looked out the window. In the light of the full moon, she could see the line of ruined trees along the north fence and the woods beyond. She wanted to walk out into the chilly night and keep walking, but here she was, and here she would stay. If only there was somebody she could tell who wouldnât condemn her.
And then she knew. She could tell Luther. Her secret would be safe with him. In her mind she turned the words over, tried them out, whispering them into the quiet of her room.
